We read Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas as the May pick for Three Friends Book Club and I could not have loved this book more. The characters jump off the page and it’s such a vivid and immersive book that you really feel you are there with them every step of the way.

Yadriel comes from a family of brujx, but being trans he isn’t being fully accepted by his family or community as a brujo. So he decides to take matters into his own hands and performs the ceremony himself. It works, and Lady Death bestows him with powers. Moments later Yadriel manages to summon his first spirit, only it’s not his cousin as he had hoped. He gets stuck with the loudmouth, energetic spirit of Julian Diaz, but the more time they spend together, trying to figure out what happened to Julian, the closer the two become

This book truly has everything, family, love, tradition, mystery, coming-of-age, friendship, humor, romance, drama, challenges, heartbreak, adventure. I’m going to have a major book. hangover after this one. I really can’t say enough good things about it, so if you haven’t read it yet you really, really should.

The audiobook is also beautifully narrated by Avi Rogue who, like our main character, is also Latinx, trans and queer. I couldn’t believe that this was the narrator’s first audiobook, it was so incredibly done! The audio comes in at 13 hours and 47 minutes and you can download it here, or click the button below for a physical copy.

Yadriel has summoned a ghost, and now he can’t get rid of him.

When his traditional Latinx family has problems accepting his gender, Yadriel becomes determined to prove himself a real brujo. With the help of his cousin and best friend Maritza, he performs the ritual himself, and then sets out to find the ghost of his murdered cousin and set it free.

However, the ghost he summons is actually Julian Diaz, the school’s resident bad boy, and Julian is not about to go quietly into death. He’s determined to find out what happened and tie up some loose ends before he leaves. Left with no choice, Yadriel agrees to help Julian, so that they can both get what they want. But the longer Yadriel spends with Julian, the less he wants to let him leave.
