Accidentally in Love

Thank you to HQ Digital for gifting me a review copy of Accidentally in Love by Belinda Missen. I love a good enemy to lovers trope, or at least a dislike to love one, so I was super excited to get my hands on this one.

Katharine Patterson is going through some pretty major life changes and all in a very short amount of time. She quits her job, moves back to her home town, breaks up with her boyfriend, opens her own business, and meets an intriguing (but infuriating) artist.

I liked this book well enough, but I wanted more from certain parts. I didnā€™t totally buy the chemistry between the main characters, and wished there was more tension build up between them. Instead, it felt like the lead-up to Kat ending up back in her home was given too much focus and felt drawn-out to me. The first third of the book could have been a lot snappier in my opinion.

There was also a lot of talk about Katā€™s photography but I didnā€™t feel like it added very much to the story in any meaningful way. I think her passion for art, art history, and galleries was enough to carry that side of the story.

But I liked Katharineā€™s journey to rediscover herself and her bravery in going out on a limb to create the life she wanted. Her courage was what endeared me to her the most. Unfortunately, I could have taken or left Kit really. I usually love a gruff exterior with the heart of a teddy-bear but I just didnā€™t fully warm up to him.

Do you suppose the author chose to nickname Christopher ā€˜Kitā€™ and spell Katherine with a K so they could be Kit Kat?

All in all, it was a solid read, Iā€™d just hoped for a little more depth and chemistry between the characters, and I didnā€™t find it to be the ā€˜laugh-out-loud funnyā€™ I was promised. This book has been compared to Mhairi McFarlaneā€™s writing, and I find her dialogue to be completely hysterical, so that was my expectation going into it.

Synopsis:

In the space of a week, Katharine Patterson has quit her job, decided to move back home, and broken up with the guy she thought was the one.

No big deal.

Because Katharine has a plan. Sheā€™s going to open her own art gallery, just like sheā€™s always wanted. What sheā€™s not going to do is worry about boyfriends.

Then she meets Kit, a handsome and talented local artist. He might be the most stubborn person Katharine has ever met. He might also make her feel like no one ever has before.

And Katharine might be about to fall accidentally in loveā€¦
